QuinLED ESP32 v4

Back to Addressable LEDs section

Years ago, because I was unsatisfied with the quality of the generic ESP32 boards that come in the D1 Mini32 form factor, I built the QuinLED ESP32 that has been included with the digital controllers such as the QuinLED Dig-Uno and Dig-Quad ever since. The design goal then was mostly to make a better board then was generally available on the market (up to 25%+ failure rate!). Over the years we’ve gone from v1 to v2 and since recently we’ve landed on v4!

The v4 boards are a bigger departure from the classic board in the same form factor since it has it’s own pinout now, please make sure to take a look at the pinout guide (also on the back of the board) to see which GPIOs map to which pins.

Partly this is because we’ve switched over to using a different ESP32 module from Espressif, the ESP32 Mini! This module has various improvements of which one is coming with 8MB flash and 2MB PSRAM by default. This means that whatever software you wish to run on them you should have some more flash and RAM available for them, no longer stuck in 4MB flash land!

Like the previous boards these are fully designed and produced in house and come in three variants, the AB (Antenna Board), AE (Antenna External) for when you need a bit more range or better signal and the ABE (Antenna Board + Ethernet)! That last one has gone through a more radical redesign and it’s now a single PCB, no longer 2 PCBs stacked on top of each other!

Next my custom design has a USB-C port, Load-switch auto input switching with reverse flow blocking and current limiting, additional ESD protection diodes, onboard USB-to-serial programmer with auto-reset circuit, direct 3.3V in support for QuinLED Dig-Uno v4 / Dig-Quad v4 direct feed, onboard LDOs to still run off 5V (pin in or USB-C) when required, robust capacitors and power regulation and since these are often used in LED projects, a built in I2S PDM microphone!

Since the board is small, here are some renders showing the new board in detail!

Also perfect for generic usage!

Although my ESP32 boards are mostly known for coming with the QuinLED Dig-Uno and QuinLED Dig-Quad boards, they also work perfectly as a stand-alone ESP32 modules! Especially if you are looking for an External antenna or Ethernet version it can often be hard to find one readily available in this form factor.

No POE?

My boards do not come with POE by default, POE adds a lot of circuitry to the boards meaning they couldn’t be the current form factor anymore and that it would basically make all boards more expensive, also for those people who don’t need POE.

We recommend adding an external POE extractor block, making it one of the most affordable “POE capable” Ethernet boards on the market today!
